See Submarine Shetland with our purpose-built,
twin-engined vessel 'Dunter III'

LOMVI cruises under water on its remote control cable. All our tours around Bressay, Noss and the North Isles (with Thule Charters) include underwater viewing with our remotely-controlled tethered mini-submarine, 'LOMVI' (Lowered Overboard Marine Viewing Instrument). No other wildlife tour operator in Shetland offers this special treat.

*Live underwater colour video cameras!

Shetland's wildlife above the surface is spectacular (even Alaska doesn't have such accessible, large seabird cliffs) - but beneath the waves it can be even more amazing.

Many passengers have told us the submarine viewing was the most memorable and unexpected part of their trip.

The Kelp ForestsOur tethered mini-submarine sends its digital video pictures back to display screens on deck and in the cabin - showing fascinating images from the caves and kelp forest.

Lights on the underwater camera reveal the astonishing colours and variety of this marine wonderland, right on Lerwick's doorstep but normally unseen.

Early and late in the season the underwater visibility can be astounding in one of the most productive seas on Earth.

Shetland's Secret Forest

A Grey Seal yearling glides over the kelp forest ...We visit rocky reefs and Shetland's secret forest - the vast beds of waving kelp that are home to hundreds of species.

... and checks whether our underwater camera is edible! We 'fly' the camera inside caves and down submerged cliff faces for extraordinary, close-up views of the teeming life beneath the surface - including zooplankton, sea urchins, crabs, comb jellies, soft corals, sea anemones, and colonies of other strange and ancient animals that look like plants.

We often meet our ever-inquisitive seals - who will sometimes swim up and nuzzle the mini-submarine!

Whatever the weather, you can watch these underwater images in the comfort of our heated cabin, while you enjoy complimentary tea, coffee and biscuits.

Dunter III is the only excursion vessel in Shetland with sub-sea cameras - thanks to financial assistance from Shetland Islands Council, Shetland Enterprise and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

A Sea Urchin tastes the water with its hundreds of tube feet The comb jelly Beroe Cucumis The jellyfish Aurelia aurita cruisng just below the surface This Sea Anemone is a carnivorous animal despite its name The Guillemot's variable geometry wing makes a brilliant flipper underwater
