NEW FOR 2008!
The
'Raingoose' Cruise to the North Isles of Shetland - duration 7-8 hours
Sailing
daily from Lerwick at 10.15am, our fast new catamaran Ruby May takes you
north for the 'Raingoose' Cruise – an unforgettable day exploring the North Isles
of Shetland with knowledgeable local guides Frank Miller and Stewart Isbister.
Weather permitting, we visit the gannetry at Hermaness
National Nature Reserve and sail round Britain’s farthest north – Muckle Flugga
Lighthouse and the Out Stack.
The tidal sounds around Yell, Unst and Fetlar are important
seabird and seal feeding areas. We guarantee close-up sightings of seabirds in
large numbers. We’ll show you the shy and mysterious Red- throated Diver - the
‘Raingoose’ in Shetland dialect. There's also a chance of seeing otters,
porpoises and even whales.
The
scenery is beautiful and varied – from dramatic cliffs and stacks to secluded
beaches, uninhabited islets and sheltered coves. We can show you some amazing
geology: storm beaches, traces of ancient tsunamis, a submerged forest, and the
shingle bars and sunken rocks of this classic drowned coastline.
We
nose into quiet bays and anchor by reefs to launch our remote-control video
camera and discover the astonishingly rich marine life beneath the surface.
Along
the way we pass prehistoric brochs, Viking settlements, Hanseatic trading
harbours and 17th century lairds’ mansions. There’s a story round every corner
as we follow the wake of the old Earl of Zetland North Isles steamers
that served this part of Shetland for over 100 years until the 1970s.
The route varies daily according to the weather. Our aim is to
keep you in sheltered water as far as possible.
Morning
coffee and afternoon tea are included. There's a picnic lunch on board,
featuring the best of fresh Shetland produce.
This is no ordinary journey but a fascinating experience to
treasure for a lifetime.
